Abigail McNamee, Ed.D., Ph.D.
Ed.D., Child Development, Curriculum, and Supervision;
Ph.D., Developmental Psychology
I have been a professor of child development, and Chair of the Department of Early Childhood and Childhood Education at Lehman College, The City University of New York, for many years. I have also been a child development consultant with families focusing on children's developmental issues.
In my work as a professor and child development consultant, I have always been intrigued by, and respectful of, the stories that children tell. Adults sometimes don't hear, and if heard don't listen carefully to, these stories; stories which sometimes come spontaneously, sometimes wait for the asking.
Jennifer Woods Pitkin, B.A.
B.A., English and Socioology, Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY.
I have been site coordinator of the Children's Center at the Medical Center, University of Vermont (Burlington) and Quality Coordinator and Adoption Specialist for Work Family Directions in Boston. I have also been a volunteer training therapist and group therapist specializing in eating disorders at the Wilkins Center, Boston.
I am the mother of the four young Pitkin children featured in the series of children's picture books written with Abigail McNamee who happens to be my mom.
We think that children's stories offer a view of the world, as a child experiences it . . . and this is important. Many children, hearing these stories, will know that there are children who have experienced what they have experienced, that they are not alone. Children, whose life has offered different experiences, may be surprised and intrigued to learn about others. Adults who live and work with children will be enriched as they attend to children's thoughts and feelings, whatever the topic.
